Translation Memory. Translation Memory. Translation Memory.

In a recent article I wrote on “Going Global On A Budget,” I spoke about the importance of consistency. I specifically recommended companies try and say the same thing the same way every time. My goal was not to make your piece sound redundant or boring but rather to simplify the translation process for you and your professional language partner. This practice of being consistent will help your translation partner leverage repetitive content by utilizing translation memory tools or what we in the industry refer to as “CAT” or Computer Assisted Translation tools. These tools will not only increase productivity and create a more cohesive product from a linguistic-brand point of view, but they will also save you and your business time and money down the road.

Translation memory is basically a database that stores so-called “segments,” which can be sentences or sentence-like units (headings, titles, terms or elements in a list) that have previously been translated. A translation memory stores the words, phrases and paragraphs that have already been translated, in order to aid human translators when translating similar content. The translation memory stores the source text and its corresponding translation in language pairs called “translation units.”

According to a 2006 survey of language professionals by the Imperial College in London, England, the vast majority of companies producing multilingual documentation are using translation memory systems. In fact, 82.5% of the 874 respondents confirmed they use translation memory.

It is important to remember that the more repetitive a text is – the better translation memory will work. This is simply because of the mechanical and consistent nature of the content. Translation memory is therefore a must for technical translation; however, translation memory can also be very useful in legal translations, where references and updates to previously translated documents are common.

Following are some of the key benefits of using translation memory:

  • Establishes common terminology and translates terms, definitions, headlines and technical phrases consistently. This is especially important when different translators collaborate on a single project.
  • Maintains consistency across translators’ work. This is the case not only within one document, but from project to project – even if the assignments are spaced months apart!
  • Ensures documents are completely translated. (Translation memory does not accept empty target segments!)
  • Increases the volume a single translator can translate. Translation memory will “remember” previously translated content and retrieve it when necessary so translators don’t have to translate the same content again – saving time and money.
  • Permits translation companies like Junction International offer long-term clients significant savings down the road. Because translation memories allow translators to identify content that has been previously translated, translation companies can offer steep discounts for repetitions that will only have to be edited – instead of translated.

Happy International Translator’s Day!

On September 30th, translators and interpreters all over the world celebrate their profession. This date was chosen to pay tribute to St. Jerome, the Catholic patron saint of translators and interpreters, who translated the Old and New Testaments into Latin. Later to be recognized by the Council of Trent as the official version of the Bible: the Vulgate.

Here’s to all translators who day in and day out help the world communicate efficiently, and with so much passion!

The Art and Science of Translating Legal Documents

Legal translation presents an interesting challenge for translation companies like Junction International because it calls for skills across several practice areas, it is often requested under tight deadlines, and always requires the most exacting of quality assurances.
Legal translation projects range from translating a business agreement, to a short watch notice, to piles of legal discovery for an international lawsuit. In all cases, a translation must be correct and faithfully reflect both the meaning and intent of the original document. There is no margin for error, ambiguity or omission in legal translation.

Cross-Cultural Consulting

The world is shrinking. Meanwhile, companies are growing and expanding. However, no matter the size of your business, you’ll likely cross paths with a customer from another culture. To be competitive and one step ahead of the competition, true business professionals need to be culturally savvy. The most expedient way to gain knowledge of another culture is to find a company, like Junction International, that specializes in cross-cultural consulting.

According to Junction International President & CEO, Claudia Waitman, “Not only is it important to be culturally aware when competing for new business and attracting new customers, but it’s also critical within internal business culture at companies – especially when the business is growing into new markets.”  She adds, “A perfect example is India, where people will shake their head side-to-side to indicate that they agree with what you’re saying. This is the opposite of the United States, where people will shake their head side-to-side when disagreeing or to indicate no.”

Following are a few more examples of how not only language varies by country and culture, but interactions do to:

  • Argentina: Even if people do not know each other the usual way to greet is with a kiss on the cheek. However, when people do know each other … they kiss on the cheek and hug. In formal or business occasions, among people that don’t know each other, a hand shake is more common.
  • Brazil: In woman-woman and woman-man interactions, the most common way to greet is kissing one another on the cheeks. The number of kisses varies between one and three, depending on the place, but you always start from the right cheek. Hugs are also very common. In more formal contexts, people usually shake hands. All this is often complemented by a smile and “Oi!” or “Olá!” followed by questions to check how the other person is doing.
  • France: When people do not know each other, as for a first meeting or for business matters, they shake hands. When people know each other, as between friends, or acquaintances or even colleagues in some cases (equal level, never boss/subordinate), they kiss.
  • Japan: When meeting, people bow from the waist with their palms on their thighs and heels together

  • Malaysia: Both hands touch the other person’s hands when meeting and are then brought back to the breast. This is referred to as a salame gesture. In Malaysia people also greet each other by saying “Where are you going?” The polite response is “Just for a walk.”

  • Philippines: Most commonly, a limp handshake is all that is necessary.
